An Original Painting has textured brush strokes. Watercolor or gouache original paintings will typically be in a rough paper with a distinctive grain. A Print is usually flat and has a dot matrix pattern, the same pattern you find in magazines or book images. An Original Painting has irregular and uneven paint on the edges of the stretched canvas. How to Determine if a Painting Is an Original or Reproduction. If you are buying a painting for your own enjoyment, buy what you like and what feels reasonable. But buying a work of art as an investment is very different. It is not so much.
Yes, I think Marlene hit the nail on the head. Very good question, Myra. And a beautiful piece.
That's been the central issue in the retailing of my watercolors -- the framing, under glass, issue. I've hated it from the very beginning -- the moment you go even near the question of framing with the client, it immediately becomes a 'custom' framing issue then (to match their drapes) and, all of a sudden the beautiful painting you've just completed is forgotten in the wake of the new conquest of framing which, all of a sudden, the artist is now liable for.
One watercolor artist here seems to have resolved the question.
Donald Maier, with over 1000 images here, probably two-thirds of which are watercolor (most painted on location, a few from photographs), says if anyone wants to buy his originals he removes it from it's frame (if it's on display), and sells it to them, only, unframed.
For most of my works on display, I have on the title plate the price and then, in ( ), 'unframed'. And that is the only way I will sell my work.
If I have few, or fewer, sales, I simply regard that as my flaw in the work itself and, it's back to producing a better image that is irresistable. (I know, in my dreams).
I simply won't mess with the framing aspect barely at all, however and, instead regarding it as including the client in the whole process of 'experiencing' the art, if I allow them to participate, that is to have it framed on their own, separately.
I suspect once we as a watercolorist become known for how we do the business part of our craft, that people will accept that as simply how it's done.
Norman Rockwell said to never display a piece unframed but, here, at least when someone is buying an original, I would have to part ways.

How can you tell the difference between a watercolor and a print?
A watercolor is usually done on a heavy paper specifically made for watercolor, and on close examination this should be evident. Anything that is printed will have a dot pattern in it. The dot pattern becomes visible at certain magnifications. A very fine dot pattern will be harder to see than that of a color photograph in a newspaper.
